Sunday, February 11, I saw an odd looking flicker in my backyard. It was different from the Red-shafted ones I have been studying for years in the back yard. A few photographs and research confirmed that it was indeed a male Yellow-shafted flicker.
It had the black cheeks instead of red.
It had the red chevron on the back of its neck instead of a plain neck
And it had the yellow tail and wings. This was a lifetime bird for me. It is always fun to see a new bird and to be able to study it.

Congrats on seeing the yellow shafted! I hope to see one in my yard this spring--they generally stick to the wooded areas but in Spring they come to poke in the ground of the lawn...I see the RED shafted when I visit my sister in Colorado..

Can't believe that we BOTH showed our Northern Flickers this morning, Bill.... Ours are quite common in our area... They certainly are gorgeous birds, aren't they?

Great find! We have red-shafted flickers everywhere, but I'm yet to see a yellow one. Thanks for the photos- now I know what to look for.
